Watches are classified as either mechanical watches or as quartz watches.

Mechanical watches are broken down to manual wind watches and automatic winding watches. Mechanical watches are constructed of all mechanical components. By the way, mechanical watches therefore require no battery to run. Mechanical watches are less accurate, heavier and usually cost more than similar quartz watches. It takes a lot more expertise to put a mechanical watch together.

Quartz watches do need a battery to run, are more accurate, and less expensive than similar mechanical watches. There is an additional cost and inconvenience with quartz watches as the battery needs to be changed every few years.

Watches are in turn classified into categories based on their functions or complications known as chronograph, moon phase and perpetual calendar for example.

Diamond watches, chronograph watches, dive watches and large face watches are some of the popular watches available on the market today.

Diamond watches are popular due to the precious stones embedded in the watch. Diamonds usually add some sparkles to the watch.

Chronograph watches have a stop watch feature built right into the watch.

Dive watches are often rugged in appearance and convey a feeling of durability with the high water resistance factor.

Large face watches are popular with celebrities and quite easy to tell the time.

The LED Digital watches arrived to the watch industry in the late 1960′s and early 1970″s.  Digital watches are quite unique in that the watch has not moving parts!  The Japanese and Americans were the forerunners in the design of the LED digital watch.

There is a very wide choice of watch band materials ranging from eel skin to stainless steel. If you are quite active, involved in getting the watch wet very often, than a metal bracelet, rubber or plastic strap is recommended. They are easy to clean and maintain. A leather strap is a no no  when submerged in water and will normally deteriorate the band.

Mineral crystals and sapphire crystals are the recommended materials for most watches. Sapphire crystal is much harder, is more scratch resistant than mineral crystals. Sapphire crystals are usually more expensive. Materials made for acrylic or glass should be avoided. They tend to be used in many low end watch ranges.

Watch materials used for watch cases are either titanium or stainless steel which are quite durable. Titanium is lighter and tends to be more expensive than stainless steel.
